AM25-ST-05-L - Choose Your Own Adventure: Spooky Serology, Mysterious Molecular, and Eerie Incompatibility

Session Description: What do you do when you encounter an ABO discrepancy, a panreactive antibody panel, or an RH variant genotype? What assays would or could you perform next, and what is required by Standards? How do you arrive at a final interpretation to provide the safest blood for transfusion? Determining which test to utilize and correctly deciphering results can impact patient safety and well-being.

This year, we bring back the interactivity of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” format, while focusing on different complex immunohematology/blood group genomics case scenarios, always highlighting the advantages and limitations of serologic and molecular methods. In this Halloween-themed session, participants will act as blood bankers, selecting appropriate methods, decoding results, and avoiding transfusion terrors.

Through active participation, blood bankers will assess and enhance their knowledge of methods and techniques for application in future challenging cases. Clinicians will gain insight into various testing approaches. Together, they will collaborate on unit selection. Uncommon cases, while challenging, are always an adventure!
