Dr. O’Brien is a pathologist with expertise in transfusion medicine. In addition to her role as Medical Director of the Blood Bank at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, she has served as the Clinical Pathology Residency Director since 2016 and the Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Director at BIDMC since 2020.
She received her training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, where she stayed on as a staff pathologist and Medical Director of the blood bank for four years. During that time, she also served as Medical Director of the Blood Bank at the Armed Forces Blood Bank Center in the Pacific Northwest. Following completion of her military service, she completed a fellowship in transfusion medicine at Puget Sound Blood Center (now Bloodworks Northwest), after which point, she was recruited to BIDMC.
She is involved at the national level related to her clinical expertise; she has completed five years of service on the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) eLearning committee and served as chair since 2021. She was also appointed chair of the Clinical Hemotherapy subsection of the AABB’s Transfusion Medicine Subsection Coordinating Committee in 2022. In her role as the AABB representative to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, and the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, she has presented on transfusion topics in obstetrics at national meetings.
