Dr. Jennifer O’Brien is the Section Head of Transfusion Medicine at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. She currently oversees the Blood Bank, Donor Center, Cell Therapy, Apheresis, and HLA Laboratories in New Orleans as well as provide guidance to Ochsner South Louisiana System Hospitals. She previously served as an Assistant Professor and a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville, where she has served as the Medical Director of the Blood Bank as well as Medical Director of Autotransfusion. She additionally served as Interim Medical Director of Apheresis. She provides clinical coverage for transfusion services, blood bank, donor center, apheresis, and cellular therapy. She provides clinical consultation on platelet refractoriness management, coagulation management, and transfusion appropriateness. Other areas of interest include platelet refractoriness, cellular therapy, massive transfusion, patient blood management, and COVID-19 convalescent plasma. She has experience in the transfusion support of solid organ and bone marrow transplant patients. She has experience in perioperative blood collections, including acute normovolemic hemodilution and cell salvage. Previously, she served as the Assistant Medical Director at the University of Maryland. The blood banks for Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans, Mayo Clinic Florida and University of Maryland are AABB-accredited, CAP-accredited, and FACT-accredited.
