Dr. Gagan Mathur is a board-certified Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking physician, serving as the Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He also holds the title of Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the UCI School of Medicine. With an MBA from the University of Iowa Tippie School of Management and certification as a Physician Executive (CPE) through the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL), Dr. Mathur combines clinical expertise with strategic leadership to improve healthcare delivery.
At UCI Medical Center, Dr. Mathur leads a comprehensive Transfusion Medicine program, including the blood bank, therapeutic apheresis, cellular therapy, and donor center services. His clinical focus spans patient blood management, therapeutic apheresis, and cellular therapies. In addition to his operational responsibilities, he actively contributes to education and research to advance clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Mathur plays a significant role in the global healthcare community. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM) as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee, as well as Chair of the Membership and Mentorship Committee, where he leads initiatives to promote collaboration and mentorship in the patient blood management field. At the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), he chairs the Perioperative Accreditation Committee and is a member of the Accreditation Program and Perioperative Standards Committees, supporting global efforts to enhance safety and quality in transfusion practices.
