AM25-SN-37-L - Bridging the Gaps: Hospital–EMS Collaboration for Safe and Effective Prehospital Transfusion
Sunday, October 26, 2025
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM PT
Room: SDCC 31
As EMS agencies expand their use of prehospital transfusion to improve outcomes in trauma and critical care, some hospitals and blood centers remain hesitant to support these programs due to concerns around inventory management, product return, chain of custody, and continuity of care. This session is designed to address those concerns head-on, offering hospital-based stakeholders and blood providers practical insights from institutions that have successfully partnered with EMS agencies to implement safe, effective, and resource-conscious transfusion programs.
Through real-world examples, presenters will showcase collaboration models that prioritize blood stewardship, safety, and operational alignment. EMS attendees will gain a deeper understanding of hospital priorities and learn how to structure partnerships that address shared risks and foster mutual accountability. The session will offer tools and strategies to support system-wide readiness, reduce waste, and improve patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
Identify common hospital and blood center concerns related to EMS transfusion programs, including inventory management, product return, and chain of custody.
Analyze real-world collaboration models that demonstrate how hospitals, EMS agencies, and blood collectors have worked together to address these concerns effectively.
Discuss communication strategies, shared protocols, and logistical frameworks that ensure safety, efficiency, and traceability across partners.
Evaluate data on clinical outcomes, cost savings, and resource optimization resulting from early transfusion supported by hospital-EMS collaboration.
Apply insights to initiate or enhance EMS–hospital partnerships that strengthen transfusion readiness and community emergency response.
