The lecture describes the physiology of iron regulation and its principal disorders, as seen by a physician-researcher who spent a quarter of a century studying the subject.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the distribution and movement of iron in the human body 
  • Highlight the role of hepcidin and ferroportin as the endocrine dyad that controls the absorption and distribution of iron
  • Review how hepcidin is regulated by iron, erythropoietic activity, and inflammation/host defense
  • Explain the molecular basis of iron disorders from iron deficiency anemia to hemochromatosis
