Background/Case Studies: The goal of the study is to decrease the percentage of transfusions in hemodialyzed patients' by increasing the blood bank personnel and hemodialyzed patient education, and awareness about RBC transfusions given as single unit blood transfusions in non-actively bleeding patients (adults) from 0% in June 2023 to 100% by the end of April 2024 at private hospital setting.
Study
Design/Methods: All transfusions requests of PRBCs for dialyzed patients (10 cases) from June 2023 to April 2024 were screened for transfusion indication, history of transfusion and alloimmunization. All blood bank personnel were educated about transfusion practices in hemodialyzed patients and patients received education about transfusion indications and inconvenient. There was follow up from June 2023 to April 2024 of incidence of transfusions number, rate of allo-immunizations and satisfaction of patients.
Results/Findings: The study showed the increase of educational rat in personnel and patients in hemodialysis from 0% to 100%. All patients were treated by Iron and erythropoietin. All patients had no history of transfusions, no history of alloimmunization and history of anemia symptoms in 10% of cases and history of cardiac co-morbidities in 10% of cases. The decision of transfusion after education of personnel and patients decreased from 100% to 10% all over the months. There were no transfusion reaction incidents. The satisfaction of patients increased from 90% to 100% during period of study. Conclusions: The education about transfusion indications and inconvenient for hemodialyzed patients and personnel allowed to improve the transfusion practice and the one-unit single transfusion rule.
